The Good and Bad of Polar GPS G3 and RS800CX,
Polar RS800CX Multi Sport Heart Rate Monitor Watch with G3 GPS Sensor W.I.N.D.I have had the Polar 625X for a number of years. The 625X product really has not changed but it works very well. Changing to RS800CX was pretty easy as a result, but of not a Polar user need to read manual and get the many features. Since I like to mountain bike, run, and/or road ride (Triathlons) I needed something that would give me HRM data as well as the other data from the 625x that I like to see. The 625X only had a foot pod for pace and a special bike adapter for biking. So I liked the Altitude, speed, pace, HR data, and HRM zones but so many devices. What I really like about the RS800CX:
– I can use on all bikes and running without special equipment everywhere.
– The look and feel of the watch so I can wear it all the time it fits under work shirt sleeves. I had to take the big and unstylish 625x on and off all the time since it was unsightly and bulky.
– The GPS unit turns on and quickly acquires signal. Also strap built very well.
To exercise you just turn on GPS, start your watch and forget about all of it until you want to check your pace or HR zone. The flashing heart in your custom training zone 1-5 is very helpful in the display. Like most watches exercising and flipping through screens can be be a challenge. As is finding a balance between viewability and the amount of data that can be displayed on the small screen and in big letters. Increase the screen size too much and you have a computer that can’t be worn all the time and as a result is likely to be forgotten for many workouts (some Garmins). I am not sure of the balance has been struck on the Polar RS800CX but I was able to see most of what I wanted to see without an issue and was able to flip through screens during the workout to see pace, HR and a few other data.
After exercise I just pointed the watch at the Infrared device and load my exercises into the excellent Polar 5 software. I can then analyze graphically and with data the zones and how my workout fit my goals. Some people have complained about the GPS not integrating with mapping etc. I really don’t want that feature so if you do you have to go to Garmin or other device – I think. This watch is about valuable data and not fancy GPS mapping features. And that is coming from a real gadget geek. I really like the software and Polar is a great HRM company from my experience. I would guess but don’t know that Garmin with its roots in GPS would provide a more comprehensive GPS feature set. Your choice will depend on your needs and interests.

Best Polar Training Computer Yet,
I am a sponsored (not by polar) competitive distance runner and have used this device in training at least once every day for the last 300 days (approx 530 training hrs). Prior to the RS800 I used a s625x for a few years.
Firstly, this is a training computer, not a watch. You can use it as a watch if you like but it is primarily a training computer.
Reading the existing reviews for this product it appears there are a lot of ‘user’ issues with people failing to operate the device correctly as opposed to actual faults. The majority of my issues are simple wear and tear which perhaps a comment on the longevity of the product if used a lot.
I use the RS800 + GPS + S3 footpod + HRM + Performance Software.
RS800 – 5 star
Works perfectly. You’d have to be an idiot if you found it confusing or difficult to operate. IR link to PC is fine and data transfer works without a hitch. I found replacing the battery myself easy and have done it once in 300 days.
The customizable on-screen reporting data is a great addition.
GPS – 5 star
Accurate.
Using good quality AAA’s I get around 10hrs run time. I decided to go with the RS800 over the Garmin 405 as the Garmin gets less then hrs run time before hard powering the entire watch off leaving you with a ‘blank wrist band of uselessness’.
The GPS is robust and has survived a few hard knocks and falls on trail.
It is fast to get satellites and has never lost them during a run through town or in dense bush. I race friends to get satellites before training runs and can say the G3 beats their Timex and Garmin units hands down.
The only complaint I have about the GPS unit is the velcro armband hooks all wore out within a few months of use. I now have to use safety pins.
S3 Footpod – 1 star. NOTE: the S1 footpod is NOT included in this RS800CX Multi bundle.
Have to say I preferred the S1. The S3 is smaller and has cadence which is great when the unit works. I lose communication with the device more often then not so I don’t bother training with it and only use it when racing. The S1 ate batteries but at least it worked.
The rubber strap that holds the S3 on broke and I now have to tie it to my shoe with string.
I don’t know anyone that hasn’t had a problem with the footpod.
Performance Software – 5 star
Hard to imagine how you could make this any better. The Google Earth interface is brilliant.
If you like data and know how to use a computer then there is no software comparable.
Chest strap – 5 star
Never had a problem with the Polar chest straps. If you wash it as instructed it will out last any other part of this kit.

Looking For A Watch With Built In Heart Rate Monitor? Does anyone know if there is a good mens sports watch with a built in or arm strap heart rate monitor and calorie counter, that is both reliable and accurate? I like the Garmin 405 series, but would prefer a watch with a built in heart rate monitor/calorie counter or an arm strap. Help!
If you want an accurate heart rate monitor, you’re going to have to go with a chest strap. That’s just the way it is.
And calories are going to be pretty consistent for you based on your weight and distance. You don’t really need that ability built-in to a device, and there’s software after-the-fact (like SportTracks) that can readily calculate calories for you too.
I’d look into the Garmins, but maybe look at things like the 305 (or 310XT) as well.
What Heart Rate Monitor Strap Will Work With My Timex 585? (I Lost The Original Strap).? I have a Timex 585 Heart Rate Monitor watch. I lost the heart rate monitor strap and couldn’t find the information on the timex website. I’d like to buy a replacement strap.

Looks like the band is pretty specific to the watch (not like others where you can buy a replacement at Wal-Mart).

Where Should Heart Rate Be During Exercise To Maximize Fat Burn? I’m 19 years old, 5’2”, 143.8 pounds. I’m starting an exercise program today to try to lose around 25 pounds or so. I have a heart rate monitor (watch that came with the chest strap) but I’m not quite sure what my heart rate should be at. I just did a workout and my average heart rate was 153bpm, with a max of 188bpm somewhere during the workout. Is this good? If someone could just give me a range of where my average heart rate should be to maximize fat burn that would be super helpful. If it makes a difference, my resting heart rate is typically pretty low, usually around 52bpm.

Absolutely, they are effective but I would stick with the strapped models.
Our company tests these products from all major manufacturers and Polar is definitely the most accurate on calories, something about their formula seems to make the calories come out more accurate then Garmin, Timex and most of the other major brands.
The top reason to use one is that it helps you regulate your intensity, even hiking, at the desired zone range so you receive the aerobic benefit, fat burning or whatever element you are seeking from that particular exercise.
Anyone who tells you to rest based upon time intervals does not get the point of recovery. Recovery is based upon heart rate, thus for your Jillian Michael s DVDs it might be a waste of time if she is not using heart rate based recovery, which is the only correct method for measuring recovery.

Depends on the brand and if it has a chest strap. Chest strap ones are more accurate. Did you input your stats – age, gender, h/w, etc into the watch? All of those factor into how much you’ll burn doing various activities. For example a heavy man will naturally burn more calories then a petite female and someone who is younger can generally burn more then an older person.
Heart Rate Monitor Screensaver? Hello does anyone know of any software/screen-saver I can get that will mimic those hospital heart rate monitors that show the peaks and troughs of a pulse (with a beep you can turn off) ? I would like to put it on one of my monitors whilst watching a movie. Not sure why I want this but I do.

Yes I am aware of what a screensaver used to do. However nowadays we have moved on from CRT’s so your point is indeed without a point.
A screen saver is meant to stop an Image being burned into a screen.
a hospital heart rate monitor would burn a line into the monitor (if left long enough)
So the chance of one existing would be fairly remote.

Danny Dreyer, author of Chi-Running is about the only running guru I know of that is against Heart Rate Monitors. He thinks it’s best to just listen to your body. That by paying attention to your body and not a bunch of gadgets you can tell more about your body than any gadget can. People have off days and if you paid attention only to a HRM you might over do it by trying to keep your Heart Rate in the right zone, as opposed to just running at a pace that feels good.
However, I have a HRM and I’m really happy with it. My main concern is that when I’m running and daydreaming I have a tendency to slow down. I also wanted to make sure I would push myself but not over do it.
So the basic Heart Rate Monitor has a watch part and a strap that goes around your chest. The watch part is a pretty good sports watch but it also displays your heart rate.
I’m simplifying things, but the idea is that we can determine our Maximum Heart Rate, and that we can benefit by running in certain zones. For instance, it is generally understood that running at 65% of the max is really good for weight loss and that running at 85% is anaerobic.
Most HRM watches have a way of inputting your max HR and then can display what % you are at.
Good HRMs will till you at the end of your workout what your Max HR was, what your average was, and some will even show you how many minutes you were in each Zone.
Really Good HRMs will have interval timers, and alarms. So you could set it to beep after 5 minutes to let you know when your warm up is over. Or you could set it to beep if your heart rate goes too high or too low.
The best HRMs will have some kind of computer interface and will automatically log your runs and graph them. Also computer interfaces are the best way to program complicated interval training programs.
When you start looking at the best HRMs you will find they have GPS built in. It turns out that having a GPS HRM watch gives you the most flexibility in programming runs and looking at computer graphs and displays.
Mostly you will find runners with GPS HRMs. In gym the GPS is useless. But the HRM is still very useful. On the treadmill and elliptical a HRM watch means you can let go of the handles and swing your arms. Plus you get a log of your activity.
I’ve tried low end Polars and Timexes. They are both adequate. The Timex “Trainer” line is about $100. I like them because they have good interval timer features.
I ended up getting a Garmin 305. The 305 has a lot of features and doesn’t cost as much as the newer models.
There is a blog called DC Rainmaker where a guy talks about HRMS and GPSs. He has compared a lot of the models and it’s worth checking out.

Most heart rate monitors should come with software that can be uploaded onto your computer. the best way to get it online is by using the trainingpeaks program. it is a coaching program used by most of the cycling community. go to http://www.trainingpeaks.com for more info.
as for a good heart rate monitor i’d say go with a polar, but if you’re looking to add a power meter later look at the cyclops power tap, because it has both heart rate and a power meter built in. training with a power meter and heart rate is the ideal way to train these-a-days.

I know that there are watches out there that monitor calories burned and your heart rate while you are exercising but is there any inexpensive watch that is good for swimmers? I would stick with the Nike+ unless you should either monitor your heart rate because of a physical problem or need it for serious training such as getting into race shape for peak performance. Heart rate is the best indicator for short intervals since it lets you know when to run the next interval when your heart rate reaches 120 heart beats per minute. This alone is worth a heart rate monitor for milers or serious runners since your rapidly increase your fitness by training this way since it will train your body to adapt to the stress and improve running at your maximum. Companies For Heart Rate Watches? I live in Canada and I trying to buy a heart rate watch. I know Polar makes great heart rate watches but I don’t think they are available in Canada. Are there any good companies that make good heart rate watches? I am looking at Timex but is it a good company?
Yes, you will be quite happy with a Timex heart rate monitor. This is very simple technology now days. Get a nice cheep one. You will tire of it quite soon, I use a $7 stethoscope & watch, myself.
“Polar” Heart Rate Monitors? I am looking at buying a Polar heart rate monitor. I have a choice between two.
The F4 or the F6. the F4 is $109.00 and the F6 is $129.22.
(both come with chest strap. But these are just pics of the watches)

The Polar F6 is the better heart rate monitor. For example, it can keep up to 12 daily files (diaries) of your training, whereas the F4 can’t do that. With daily files, you can review what you did during your previous sessions. Both Polar F4 and F6 count calories, but the Polar F6 goes one step further: it tells you the percentage of calories due to fat burnt. This is very useful information for people wanting to lose weight!

Dextrocardia And Heart Rate Monitors? Having been diagnosed with dextrocardia i am trying to find out if i can use a heart rate monitor while at the gym. i have done some internet searches but with no luck. will a heart rate monitor read correctly?

As you must be aware, the term Dextrocardia means that the heart is in the right chest (dextro means right in Latin) rather than in the left chest, as is the usual case. There are various forms of dextrocardia, ranging from a normally configured heart that is positioned further to the right than normal (dextro-position) to so-called “mirror-image dextrocardia,” in which the positions of the heart chambers and major vessels are exactly the reverse of the “normal” arrangement. Chest x-rays and an ECG (echocardiogram) may be used to determine which type of dextrocardia is present. Isolated dextrocardia (i.e. without any other associated heart defects) is a rare condition and occurs with equal frequency in males and females. There are many different types of sports heart monitors. Most are worn as a watch. Some are fitted over the chest whilst ‘working out’ and these are normally able to be mounted to the left or right. Not having any details of the type of dextrocardia that you have, it is not possible to either advocate gym work or not. This should be a matter for you to discuss with your doctor.

Heart Rate? You know on treadmills and some bicyling machines at the gym, they have sensors you hold on to to measure your heart rate or bloodpressure.
when i was on induction, the lady seemed confused and said it was high when it was 180.
i went on work out yesterday and it was 200 and then i measure 5 mins later on the machine (still running) and it was 99.
is it broken? or is that normal?
It sounds like it was broken – if your heart *was* beating that fast, you’d actually be feeling it leaping about in your chest and it’d actually be hurting.
One of the machines at my gym flips out every so often, one second saying my pulse is 75, the next saying its 189 and I know full well if it were 189, I’d be in a heap on the floor!
Buy a heart rate monitor, one that has a chest strap and watch. If you want to exercise within the whole ‘fat burning zone’ heart rate then that’s the way to go.
Shoud I Get A Heart Rate Monitor? I’m into fitness and timing and all that.

Danny Dreyer, author of Chi-Running is about the only running guru I know of that is against Heart Rate Monitors. He thinks it’s best to just listen to your body. That by paying attention to your body and not a bunch of gadgets you can tell more about your body than any gadget can. People have off days and if you paid attention only to a HRM you might over do it by trying to keep your Heart Rate in the right zone. as opposed to just running at a pace that feels good.
However, I have a HRM and I’m really happy with it. My main concern is that when I’m running and day dreaming I have a tendency to slow down. I also wanted to make sure I would push myself but not over do it.
So the basic Heart Rate Monitor has a watch part and a strap that goes around your chest. the watch part is a pretty good sports watch but it also displays your heart rate.
Bear in my I’m simplifying things, but the idea is that we can determine our Maximum Heart Rate, and that we can benefit by running in certain zones. For instance, it is generally understood that running at 65% of the max is really good for weight loss. and that running at 85% is anaerobic.
Most HRM watches have a way of inputting your max HR and then can display what % you are at.
Good HRMs will till you at the end of your workout what your Max HR was, what your average was, and some will even show you how many minutes you were in each Zone.
Really Good HRMs will have interval timers, and alarms. so you could set it to beep after 5 minutes to let you know when your warm up is over. or you could set it to beep if your heart rate goes too high or too low.
The best HRMs will have some kind of computer interface and will automatically log your runs and graph them. Also computer interfaces are the best way to program complicated interval training programs.
When you start looking at the best HRMs you will find they have GPS built in. It turns out that having a GPS HRM watch gives you the most flexibility in programming runs and looking at computer graphs and displays.
Mostly you will find runners with GPS HRMs. In gym the GPS is useless. but the HRM is still very useful. on the treadmill and elliptical a HRM watch means you can let go of the handles and swing your arms. Plus you get a log of your activity.
I’ve tried Low end polars and timexes. They are both adequate. The Timex “Trainer” line is about $100. I like them because they have good interval timer features.
I ended up getting a Garmin 305. The 305 has a lot of features and doesn’t cost as much as the newer models.
there is a blog called DC Rainmaker where a guy talks about HRMS and GPSs. He has compared a lot of the models and it’s worth checking out.
Can Someone Recommend A Heart Rate Monitor? I’ve decided not to get a polar, b/c I don’t want to have to send it in for battery replacement. I’m torn between a timex and a nike c6. I’m not a runner, so I don’t care about the lap features. Any suggests?
It isn’t entirely necessary to send your Polar in to get a new battery. My riding partner and I take our Polar HRM to the local watch battery place and they’ve replaced the batteries with no problem.
Anyhow, selecting a HRM is really a matter of deciding what features you need and want rather than the brand. For example, if you want a real basic HRM with average and max heart rates, there are lots of choices. If you want to be able to compare your performance from one ride to the next you have a different set of choices. If you want to download all of your data to a computer you have still other choices. If you want a combined altimeter, speedometer, GPS, cadence sensor, etc. you have other choices. Of course, you need to consider if you want it permanently mounted on one bike, or if you need to move it around between bikes (wristwatch style is by far best if you want to use it with multiple bikes).
I’d give all these issues some thought then see what’s out there.

Analog transmission uses signals that are exact replicas of a sound wave or picture being transmitted. Digital transmission converts these signals into a binary code (0s and 1s). Digital is the newer technology.
Analog transmitters are usually compatible with the cardio machines at the gym. That’s the main advantage of the analog system.
The main advantage of a digital transmitter is it less likely to run into interference from someone else’s cardio machine, overhead power lines, or someone else’s heart rate monitor. Say for example you’re running with your friend who also wears an analog heart rate monitor. Sometimes the signals can cross, which means you’re getting his data, and he’s getting yours. This is known as “Cross Talk.” With a digital monitor, the transmission gets encoded, so you’re only getting your data. The disadvantage is some digital systems aren’t compatible with gym equipment.
All things equal, I would personally choose a digital system. You can always wear your heart rate monitor watch to the gym and keep an eye on your heart rate that way, just as you would when you’re out running the roads.
I will say, especially if you’re a female (which I am guessing is the case from your avatar), the most important thing is to try on the chest strap. Some are more comfortable than others. I personally like the Polar straps better than Timex.

Heart Rate Monitor Watch For Swimming? I am a very committed swimmer and am really getting serious about my workouts. I need a STRAPLESS HRM watch that i can use in the pool to check how hard i’m working. I’ve looked at some products but i’m not sure what to get or if the product will be worth what it is. I’ve seen some brands such as Mio or Polar. Any help?
I think the actual technology in determining your heart rate is pretty standard. The fluctuation in pricing that you see has to do with the materials the watch is made of and the features of the watch.
The more expensive ones will actually plan your workout for you (amongst other features) while the simpler ones will just tell the time and give you your heart rate.
I bought a timex made out of rubber and it works for me just fine! Leather or other fabric based straps would eventually fall apart because of the constant chlorine exposure.

Heart Rate Monitors Or Calorie Counter Watches For Swimming!? Since the summer has almost arrived i plan on swimming everyday. I know that there are watches out there that monitor calories burned and your heart rate while you are exercising but is there any inexpensive watch that is good for swimmers? The watches that i have found require you wear a chest strap so i didn’t know if there was an alternative route out there. Please help!
