Which Heart Rate Monitor Watches Are Good Out There? I need to find a good heart rate monitor watch that will actually do what it’s supposed to. I’ve been reading some reviews on different brands and models, and they all seemed to either break fast or not work correctly. So if anyone has some good experience or advie – i’d love to hear it.
oh, and it’s for a man’s or unisex watch 🙂
I think polar makes the best
Do You Really Need The Chest Strap For Heart Rate Monitor Watches? I’ve started working out w/ a personal trainer. She tells me I must get a heart rate monitor watch WITH the chest strap. She doesn’t feel like the strapless kind give as accurate of read outs. What is your experience? Do you feel like the strapless ones are just as accurate? I don’t mind getting the one w/ the strap but I just thought I’d see what other people’s experiences have been. Thanks!
They are much more accurate than the ones you hold onto on an treadmill of exercise bike. They are great, personal choice.

Is A Heart Rate Monitor Watch Effective When Hiking? I want to buy a heart rate monitor, but I want to make sure it will be effective at showing calories burned while 1) hiking and 2) doing a Jillian Michael’s dvd.
Thanks so much!
Absolutely, they are effective but I would stick with the strapped models.
Our company tests these products from all major manufacturers and Polar is definitely the most accurate on calories, something about their formula seems to make the calories come out more accurate then Garmin, Timex and most of the other major brands.
The top reason to use one is that it helps you regulate your intensity, even hiking, at the desired zone range so you receive the aerobic benefit, fat burning or whatever element you are seeking from that particular exercise.
Anyone who tells you to rest based upon time intervals does not get the point of recovery. Recovery is based upon heart rate, thus for your Jillian Michael s DVDs it might be a waste of time if she is not using heart rate based recovery, which is the only correct method for measuring recovery.
Does All Watches With Heart Rate Monitor Need A Body Strap To Sense Heart Rate? I wanted to buy a watch with a heart rate monitor but i dont want to have to put on a strap around my body. Couldnt it just sense the heart rate around the wrist?
If there are any watches which dont need straps, are they much more expensive?
Thanks
There are some things that allow you to place your finger on a monitor, for example, but they’re not as accurate nor do they usually provide nonstop readings.
The chest strap is pretty much the only consistent and reliable way to do it. If you get a decent one, you do generally adapt to them more readily than you might think.
Things like the Reebok monitor generally require you come to a standstill and hold a button for several seconds to get a reading. That might be okay if you’re wearing it primarily as a watch and sitting on the couch, but if you’re out running or something comparable it’s not really helpful.
Is The Garmin Forerunner 205 Compatible With A Heart Rate Monitor? Just bought the watch online and was wondering if its compatible with a heart rate monitor, if so i’ll get one.

No.The next model up, the 305 adds the heart rate option

Suggestions For A Good Heart Rate Monitor Strap ? Possibly With A Watch? I had a heart rate monitor watch but it was really cheap and it broke, and even when it worked you had to hold down this button for 5 seconds to get a single reading of your heart rate (and it didnt work if you were moving too violently for the watch).
I want a comfortable strap that goes around your midsection, and maybe a watch that gives you a display of the results…
are there any good straps that come WITH a watch?
I swear by my Garmin, I got a 301 model on Amazon, cheap and though there are newer versions, they don’t have anything this model had. Will give you your heart rate, you can set an alarm to go off if you go over or under a certain number of beats per minute, has GPS so it will tell you how far you’ve run, at what rate per mile or km, your average heart rate, how many calories burned, your time, has a training assistant that will let you know if you are ahead or behind of apace you have set for yourself, will time intervals letting you know how fast you have done them and when it is time to do another one. I could go on. O, you did say watch. Timex has one.
My Heart Rate Monitor? How do i read and use a heart rate monitor? i heard it depends on the quality of the heart rate monitor your using, so let’s say i buy a top of the line heart rate monitor. how do i use it to keep me motivated?
Heart rate monitors give us another way to regulate the intensity of our cardie workouts. Normally time and distance are big factors. But with a heart rate monitor one can watch that a level of intensity is maintained by looking at the heart rate. Each person has maximum heart rate and this is based on your age and weight. If you want to burn fat than you work out in the fat-burning zone of 70%-80% of your maximum. Now if you want to improve your cardie than you work out in the cardie zone of 80%-90% range. This method really goes a long way towards preventing you from over exerting yourself.
How Do Heart Rate Monitors Work? Like what do they actually detect and how accurate are they?
A heart rate monitor consists of two parts – a transmitter attached to a belt worn around the chest, and a receiver worn on the wrist like a watch. They are very accurate in detecting your heart rate.
As the heart beats, an electrical signal is transmitted through the heart muscle in order for it to contract. This electrical activity can be detected through the skin. The transmitter part of the heart rate monitor is placed on the skin around the area that the heart is beating, and picks up this signal. The transmitter then sends an electromagnetic signal containing heart rate data to the wrist receiver which displays the heart rate.
Simple heart rate monitors may only show you the heart rate at a given time. More elaborate monitors are available that not only shows the heart rate, but can be set to record time, calculate average and maximum heart rate for an exercise period, and can sound an alarm when a runner reaches or exceeds a pre-determined target heart-rate zone..
Whats Wrong With My Heart Rate Monitor ? I bought the Nike triax C8 HRM watches abt 3 years back, but i only use the HR function for less than 20 times (i think). Recently i started using it for training and it doesnt work well, on and off constantly. So i thought it was the battery problem, but after i changed the battery it doesnt work as well.
how can i fix this ?
The warranty period was over, can i sent back to them repair ?
beside, they selling the heart rate monitor strap separately ? mine was loose.
The watch itself is prob. fine. If it keeps turning on and off it means it’s not getting a constant signal. Either there is a problem with the chest strap or it is not fitting correctly. If it’s loose then tighten it.
Heart Rate Monitor Watch Reccomendations? I was looking for a heart rate monitor watch to request for Christmas and I am overwhelmed by the selection and prices. I am a runner and I also live an active lifestyle with the gym and walking/biking/hiking etc and so I need a watch that can calculate my calories burned fairly accurately. I don’t need gps or to plug in meals or anything. Just a reliable calories burned calculator. I want to have to fiddle with it as little as possible while exercising too so ease of use is important. That and reasonable pricing. Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated!!! 🙂
There are a ton of options. I’ve personally used both Garmin and Polar and both brands are pretty solid. I’ve also heard good things about Omron and Mio, though. In terms of pricing, what models to get, etc, I’d recommend checking out Heart Rate Monitors USA. That’s where I’ve gotten both my monitors. Their prices are good and they let you shop by feature and price range.

All in all, if I had to pick one type of HRM to recommend for a runner, it would probably be the Garmin Forerunner series. They’re comfortable, offer great monitoring ability, and they’re well-priced.
Exercise To Lower Heart Rate? I have a normal heart rate-ish, well, higher end of average. It’s 74-76 bpm for a 20 year old female. I’m not overweight (or have overfat) by any means, and I just would like to not be winded when I go for pretty long runs. I would love to have an “athletic” heart rate, and was wondering how to go about that? I mean I do some form of exercise every day for at least an hour (average two hours a day, and by exercise, I mean I purposely go out of my way to go on for a walk/jog aside from my moderately-very active life) and my heart rate really shocked me when I found out since I would have expected it to be significantly lower, so I guess I’m not working my heart the way I should.
Diet wise, I’m a health freak, organic fruits/vegetables and a serving of lean meat per day. Don’t drink anythinnnggggg but water constantly, and don’t eat anything that has ingredients that I don’t know 100% what it is. I’ve even gone as far as being chocolate, simple sugar, and extra-salt free (adding salt to my food) for about 3 months.
I don’t really understand why I don’t have a lower heart rate…
Exercise suggestions? How hard/long should I do it? And especially, how long do you predict before I might see improvement?
Thanks
Oh, and of course the heart rate I mentioned is my resting heart rate.
According to my doctor, a resting heart rate should be between 60-80. Your resting heart rate is perfectly within the normal range. What matters is your heart rate during exercise but since you sound extremely healthy, you probably have a healthy heart rate during exercise. How are you checking your resting heart rate? If you use a heart monitor watch, you have to keep you arm at a rested level to get an accurate result.
Heart Rate? You know on treadmills and some bicyling machines at the gym, they have sensors you hold on to to measure your heart rate or bloodpressure.
when i was on induction, the lady seemed confused and said it was high when it was 180.
i went on work out yesterday and it was 200 and then i measure 5 mins later on the machine (still running) and it was 99.
is it broken? or is that normal?
It sounds like it was broken – if your heart *was* beating that fast, you’d actually be feeling it leaping about in your chest and it’d actually be hurting.
One of the machines at my gym flips out every so often, one second saying my pulse is 75, the next saying its 189 and I know full well if it were 189, I’d be in a heap on the floor!
Buy a heart rate monitor, one that has a chest strap and watch. If you want to exercise within the whole ‘fat burning zone’ heart rate then that’s the way to go.
Heart Rate Monitor Screensaver? Hello does anyone know of any software/screen-saver I can get that will mimic those hospital heart rate monitors that show the peaks and troughs of a pulse (with a beep you can turn off) ? I would like to put it on one of my monitors whilst watching a movie. Not sure why I want this but I do.
I have tried various googles but can’t get at an answer.
Yes I am aware of what a screensaver used to do. However nowadays we have moved on from CRT’s so your point is indeed without a point.
A screen saver is meant to stop an Image being burned into a screen.
a hospital heart rate monitor would burn a line into the monitor (if left long enough)
So the chance of one existing would be fairly remote.
No real help from me sorry but maybe it will save you some time 🙁
Is The Nike+ Watch So Heart Rate Monitor? I’m trying to do some research myself and all I keep seeing is a relationship between the watch and some polarlink heart monitor thing. So can the watch by itself monitor my HR or do I need the polarlink for it to work?
The watch can not measure your heart rate beat itself, usually a heart rate monitor watch is coming with a chest strap, with frequency from 110khz, 5.3khz to 2.4G coded, 2.4G frequency is more stable but much expensive, well i have my 5.3khz heart rate monitor watch from Amazon, here is it:http://www.amazon.com/Monitor-Calories-Pedometer-Distance-Stopwatch/dp/B00GD6VHOS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1386571777&sr=8-2&keywords=dreamsport
Should I Get A Heart Rate Monitor……….? I run about 3-4 times a week and I lately got the nike plus chip, which is pretty fun.
Anyway, i’m now thinking about getting a cheap polar watch……do you think it’s worth it? cause I’m afraid I’ll stop using it after a few runs cause it will get annoying and who know if I’ll follow what my heart beat says…
I would stick with the Nike+ unless you should either monitor your heart rate because of a physical problem or need it for serious training such as getting into race shape for peak performance. Heart rate is the best indicator for short intervals since it lets you know when to run the next interval when your heart rate reaches 120 heart beats per minute. This alone is worth a heart rate monitor for milers or serious runners since your rapidly increase your fitness by training this way since it will train your body to adapt to the stress and improve running at your maximum. Remember your heart does not lie so it’s a great tool to listen to….
Are Heart Rate Monitors Accurate? How accurate are heart rate monitors when it comes to calories burned?
I wore my heart monitor while watching a scary movie and it showed that my heart rate was beating faster than when I run. Does this mean I’m getting a better workout and burning more calories by being scared than by doing cardio?
Heart rate monitors are usually very accurate devices for measuring heart rate. Thet can also make a good paper weight if they’re the right model. However, for anything else having to do with biometrics, they’re worthless.
The calorie expenditure features of ellipticals, treadmills, heart rate monitors, etc. are only accurate by accident. They all rely on norms to calculate their data. If you don’t fit the norms, their data will be inaccurate. In the case of the heart rate monitors, they don’t know anything about your stroke volume, your blood volume, your metabolic rate, etc. so they cannot provide you with personalized data. Just as with the impedance scales which are supposed to give you an indication of your percent body fat, the extra feature has more to do with selling the product than it does with its function as an instrument. In short, that feature is a gimmick.
You would be wise to use the proper instruments for measuring whatever it is you want to measure. Buy a heart rate monitor for measuring heart rate. For calculating your caloric expenditure you may as well just use websites such as this one —> http://www.calculator.net/weight-loss-calculator.html
Good luck and good health!!

What Heart Rate Monitor Watch? I would like to purchase a good HRM watch that does NOT require a chest strap but one that lets you know if you are in your training zone or not while working out. What watch woud be a good one to purchase? Can you buy ones like this? I dont need anything fancy or too expensive just something that i could use while working out and whilst doing so i would be able to see my heart rate.
Many thanks… Gina
Ive been looking for this for ages, basicallly if you want cheep then go on amazon and get a 60-70$ watch which has a chest strap… yes it looks stupid BUT it is the only way to have a constant heart rate!, ive bought otheers, all others require you to push down on a button and wait for 5 seconds,,,, and then it gives you your heart rate, but by the time it does your hearts prolly already beating less, and you dont wanna be stopping in your workout to check your heart rate! you want to keep going, so the only way to do that is constant heart rate check with a chest strap, i suggest the cheep one on amazon, LOOK INTO IT!
Dextrocardia And Heart Rate Monitors? Having been diagnosed with dextrocardia i am trying to find out if i can use a heart rate monitor while at the gym. i have done some internet searches but with no luck. will a heart rate monitor read correctly?
Steve A,
As you must be aware, the term Dextrocardia means that the heart is in the right chest (dextro means right in Latin) rather than in the left chest, as is the usual case. There are various forms of dextrocardia, ranging from a normally configured heart that is positioned further to the right than normal (dextro-position) to so-called “mirror-image dextrocardia,” in which the positions of the heart chambers and major vessels are exactly the reverse of the “normal” arrangement. Chest x-rays and an ECG (echocardiogram) may be used to determine which type of dextrocardia is present. Isolated dextrocardia (i.e. without any other associated heart defects) is a rare condition and occurs with equal frequency in males and females. There are many different types of sports heart monitors. Most are worn as a watch. Some are fitted over the chest whilst ‘working out’ and these are normally able to be mounted to the left or right. Not having any details of the type of dextrocardia that you have, it is not possible to either advocate gym work or not. This should be a matter for you to discuss with your doctor.

Best Heart Rate Moniter Watch? My Dad has A Fib which means his heart beat becomes irregular when it gets to high. And He’s decided to start working out and he makes me nervous so i want to get him a Heart Rate Moniter Watch. It needs to be with in a reasonable price range, and i would like it to be able to warn him when his heart beat gets to high or becomes irregular. And if it had like a velcro pocket on the band for his emergency pill that slows his heart down. I might be dreaming Big but if any suggestions would be great. Thanks
The Omron HR100CN Heart Rate Monitor Watch is comfortable and well ventilated to help you get the most out of your work out. Whether you like to exercise in the sunshine or after dark, the backlight function of the Omron HR100CN Wrist Heart Rate Monitor Watch provides an easy reading of your heart rate measurement, and an alarm can be programmed to let you know when your heart rate is outside the desirable range.
How To Heart Rate Monitor Watches Work? Basically what it says
how to heart rate monitor watches work?
When your heart pumps, it sends a surge of blood through your body. And, these pulses cause your arteries to expand and contract as the blood surges through. The wrist is a good place to take a heart rate measurement, because the arteries running through it have a definite pulse with each heart beat (that’s why they measure your pulse at your wrist).
With each surge of blood, the electrical conductivity of your wrist changes slightly. Or, maybe the capacitance you exhibit between a pair of electrodes changes. But, the electronic circuits in the watch detect these changes in electrical characteristics and count them over time. This is then extrapolated out over a minute and the resulting signal causes a certain number to be displayed on the screen. This is your heart rate.
Heart Rate Monitor Watch For Swimming? I am a very committed swimmer and am really getting serious about my workouts. I need a STRAPLESS HRM watch that i can use in the pool to check how hard i’m working. I’ve looked at some products but i’m not sure what to get or if the product will be worth what it is. I’ve seen some brands such as Mio or Polar. Any help?
I think the actual technology in determining your heart rate is pretty standard. The fluctuation in pricing that you see has to do with the materials the watch is made of and the features of the watch.
The more expensive ones will actually plan your workout for you (amongst other features) while the simpler ones will just tell the time and give you your heart rate.
I bought a timex made out of rubber and it works for me just fine! Leather or other fabric based straps would eventually fall apart because of the constant chlorine exposure.
Heart Rate Monitor Question? Hi,
I’m interested in buying one heart rate monitor and I have a very basic newbie question.
What is the difference between analog and digital heart rate monitor?
Thanks
Analog transmission uses signals that are exact replicas of a sound wave or picture being transmitted. Digital transmission converts these signals into a binary code (0s and 1s). Digital is the newer technology.
Analog transmitters are usually compatible with the cardio machines at the gym. That’s the main advantage of the analog system.
The main advantage of a digital transmitter is it less likely to run into interference from someone else’s cardio machine, overhead power lines, or someone else’s heart rate monitor. Say for example you’re running with your friend who also wears an analog heart rate monitor. Sometimes the signals can cross, which means you’re getting his data, and he’s getting yours. This is known as “Cross Talk.” With a digital monitor, the transmission gets encoded, so you’re only getting your data. The disadvantage is some digital systems aren’t compatible with gym equipment.
All things equal, I would personally choose a digital system. You can always wear your heart rate monitor watch to the gym and keep an eye on your heart rate that way, just as you would when you’re out running the roads.
I will say, especially if you’re a female (which I am guessing is the case from your avatar), the most important thing is to try on the chest strap. Some are more comfortable than others. I personally like the Polar straps better than Timex.
Hope this helps.
