Calories Burned On Polar Heart Rate Monitor? I have a Polar heart rate monitor that I use for cycling. When I ride or do spin class, the calories burned on the watch is different than the calories burned when I upload the information to the desktop software. For example, a spin class may show 1,000 calories burned on the watch, but when I upload the data it shows 600 calories burned. Why is it different?
Tracking your workouts by calories is kinda pointless. Its pretty easy to measure the power you put into the pedals with reasonable accuracy using a power tap, but there are a whole lot of assumptions that go into figuring out how calories in the mouth translates to watts at the pedals. Trying to do it via heartrate monitor introduces even more inaccuracy.
1. How efficient is your digestive system? This varies all over the map from one person to the next, and with the type of food eaten.
2. What’s your mechanical efficiency? Is your bike setup properly? What’s your cadence?
3. How about cardiovascular efficiency?
I have athletic goals I’m thinking about when I’m working out. Doing it solely for purposes of weight loss or burning calories would be depressing and de-motivating. The only time I think about calories is during 2+hour rides, runs, or races when I have to think about takig on sufficient calories to finish…..
Why Is My Heart Rate So High When I Excercise? I’m seventeen. Female. I just got a Polar FT4 Heart Rate Monitor two weeks ago and I use that to monitor my heart rate when I excercise. My target heart rate according to this heart rate monitor is 130-170. But I noticed that I seem to have a very high heart rate when I excercise, even if I feel physically fine. This high heart rate ranges from about 188-200.
For example, this morning I went for a run–I use a treadmill–and with no incline, and about 5mph, my heart rate was at 200. I felt fine, no heavy breathing, no pounding heart-that I could feel-I wasn’t doubling over in exhaustion. I actually felt pretty good, I thought. I stopped running anyway though, because seeing that high number was freaking me out.
Why is it like this? I am no stranger to excercise or cardio, so I’m pretty sure I’m not that out of shape. Help?????
ALSO: My goal is to burn fat when on the treadmill, and I don’t think I’m in the right “zone” for that? What should I slow my speed to?
The simple answer is that you are exercising too hard if you are getting a heart rate above your target. A generic way of determining your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age so in your case 203. And if you are running at a steady rate about 70% or 140, 142 is what your heart rate should be for fat loss. If you are “pretty sure” you are not that out of shape (and you may not be) then go with whatever you are basing that on, but you got the heart rate monitor so you would KNOW, you wanted to be basing your workouts on something objective, not subjective.
Another possibility is that the monitor is off, you can use it at rest at the same time you put your fingers on your heart and time yourself for a minute to see if it is accurate.
Finally, the best way to burn fat is interval workouts like warming up for 5-10 minutes, going hard for 1 minute and then recuperating for 2. Repeat 5-6 times. How hard you should go depends on how hard you can and still complete the 5 intervals. When you find the workout easy increase the time yu go hard and decrease the time you rest. Good luck!

I am looking for a cheap, simple Heart Rate Monitor Device that logs my Heart Rate into a computer. I am not really looking for those HRM watches, just need a sensor that simply only connects to PC.

Can Multiple Heart Rate Monitors In A Spin Class Interfere With Each Other? My heart rate monitor works fine when I’m working out on my own. But in a spin class with 10 other monitors it doesn’t seem to work. Can having a bunch of them in one room somehow interfere with normal operation?

It depends on the monitor and the transmitter. Different makers of heart rate monitor use different types of sensors and transmitters, some of which prevent “cross-talk” which is what you’re experiencing. If you’re having trouble, I’d recommend investing in a coded transmitter. If you have a Polar monitor, the Polar Wearlink+ is a good bet. Hope this helps!

Most heart rate monitors should come with software that can be uploaded onto your computer. the best way to get it online is by using the trainingpeaks program. it is a coaching program used by most of the cycling community. go to http://www.trainingpeaks.com for more info.
as for a good heart rate monitor i’d say go with a polar, but if you’re looking to add a power meter later look at the cyclops power tap, because it has both heart rate and a power meter built in. training with a power meter and heart rate is the ideal way to train these-a-days.

The chest strap is the same I have had the best luck with the Polar T31 strap. The WearLink with the vinyl strap seems to malfunction when I get very sweaty. The problem may be due to having a lot of hair on my chest. I usually wet my chest with salt water under the contacts when I put my strap on, I have so far been unable to readily find electrode jell. The medium strap that comes with the unit should be ok, my wife is the same size you are and it works just fine. Someone also makes sports bras for use with the HRM. The Polar F51 monitor is adequate for my needs, I do no need anything fancy.

The Polar F11 takes the features of the F6 and improves it with more flexibility for the advanced exerciser. The Polar F11 is more suited to the serious exerciser who has a more advanced approach to their training and doesn’t just exercise at one intensity for a set period of time. If you are a beginer than the Polar f6 should be a great for you.

Absolutely, they are effective but I would stick with the strapped models.
Our company tests these products from all major manufacturers and Polar is definitely the most accurate on calories, something about their formula seems to make the calories come out more accurate then Garmin, Timex and most of the other major brands.
The top reason to use one is that it helps you regulate your intensity, even hiking, at the desired zone range so you receive the aerobic benefit, fat burning or whatever element you are seeking from that particular exercise.
Anyone who tells you to rest based upon time intervals does not get the point of recovery. Recovery is based upon heart rate, thus for your Jillian Michael s DVDs it might be a waste of time if she is not using heart rate based recovery, which is the only correct method for measuring recovery.

There is no way to use the bodybugg w/o the website. You can use the digital display to keep track of calories burnt, but I don’t think there is any way to empty the memory w/o uploading it to the website.

As you get more expensive, you get small increases in accuracy, but mainly just more functions that will do fitness tests and write out training plans for you ect. I have Polar F4 that I am very happy with. I do not feel that i need all the extra functions and the F4 is accurate enough for my needs and has a big enough memory for me to be able to write down my scores after.

I have a Polar with a chest strap, it seems to work fine. As an added bonus the equipment at the gym that uses wireless heart rate monitor works with the chest strap. Some of the others have more features.

I was just looking at a sportline, it was a touch hrm, and it said it counts calories burned. Do you have to hold your fingers on it the whole time your working out, or do you just put your fingers on it at the end of your workout and it somehow knows how many calories you burned.

I suggest you check out how they ‘sense’ the heart beat (some need special conductive gel to be smeared all over your chest and a tight elastic strap to hold it on …)

Polar Heart Rate Monitor? So I bought a monitor from a friend but apparently I need a chest strap and transmitter . If I buy one off eBay, will it automatically sync with my watch ?
First of all, you got a crappy friend. Why would a friend rip you off like that? Your friend should have told you.
Anyway… email customer.service.usa@polar.com. Tell them exactly what watch you have (ex. FT4, FT7, FT40) and they will tell you which transmitter you should get that will sync with that wrist unit.
I suggest you buy both the belt and transmitter new and not used (when you buy a new transmitter they come together). A used strap is just gross but a used transmitter often has problems, either from being hit or dropped or poor contact with the snaps. With the first one, I got about 750 hours of use out of it (over about 9 months) before it started getting glitchy and not reading the signal well, so I used conductive gel with it and it helped with picking up the signal but I still got glitch errors such as it suddenly reading a rate of 220 (always 220) for about 10 seconds. I took perfect care of it, and from what I’ve read, this seems to be normal with that level of use.
Also, you should know that some transmitters can be synced to your phone (and watch at the same time) if that is something you are interested in. There are various apps that can link with it but which transmitter you get also depends on what phone you have. If you are interested in linking to your phone too make sure you tell polar in the email the watch you have AND what make and model phone you have.
(On a side note based on the other answerer’s reply, almost all of polar’s equipment now has user friendly maintenance. The battery in both the watch and transmitter can be changed by you, and it is advertised at such, all you need is a coin to put in the notch provided and turn it to open. As for the chest strap, they don’t have that crappy hard strap anymore, it’s nothing but an elastic band that sits basically where your bra band is. The part that reads the signal is in the front, it’s about 12 inches of a plastic type of material glued to the inside of the strap. It does still require you to wet it (the plastic part against your skin) a bit to get a good consistent signal. There is no need to wear anything extra to keep it in place, the tension on the strap alone is sufficient and it should feel about at tight as your bra.)

Danny Dreyer, author of Chi-Running is about the only running guru I know of that is against Heart Rate Monitors. He thinks it’s best to just listen to your body. That by paying attention to your body and not a bunch of gadgets you can tell more about your body than any gadget can. People have off days and if you paid attention only to a HRM you might over do it by trying to keep your Heart Rate in the right zone, as opposed to just running at a pace that feels good.
However, I have a HRM and I’m really happy with it. My main concern is that when I’m running and daydreaming I have a tendency to slow down. I also wanted to make sure I would push myself but not over do it.
So the basic Heart Rate Monitor has a watch part and a strap that goes around your chest. The watch part is a pretty good sports watch but it also displays your heart rate.
I’m simplifying things, but the idea is that we can determine our Maximum Heart Rate, and that we can benefit by running in certain zones. For instance, it is generally understood that running at 65% of the max is really good for weight loss and that running at 85% is anaerobic.
Most HRM watches have a way of inputting your max HR and then can display what % you are at.
Good HRMs will till you at the end of your workout what your Max HR was, what your average was, and some will even show you how many minutes you were in each Zone.
Really Good HRMs will have interval timers, and alarms. So you could set it to beep after 5 minutes to let you know when your warm up is over. Or you could set it to beep if your heart rate goes too high or too low.
The best HRMs will have some kind of computer interface and will automatically log your runs and graph them. Also computer interfaces are the best way to program complicated interval training programs.
When you start looking at the best HRMs you will find they have GPS built in. It turns out that having a GPS HRM watch gives you the most flexibility in programming runs and looking at computer graphs and displays.
Mostly you will find runners with GPS HRMs. In gym the GPS is useless. But the HRM is still very useful. On the treadmill and elliptical a HRM watch means you can let go of the handles and swing your arms. Plus you get a log of your activity.
I’ve tried low end Polars and Timexes. They are both adequate. The Timex “Trainer” line is about $100. I like them because they have good interval timer features.
I ended up getting a Garmin 305. The 305 has a lot of features and doesn’t cost as much as the newer models.
There is a blog called DC Rainmaker where a guy talks about HRMS and GPSs. He has compared a lot of the models and it’s worth checking out.
Best Heart Rate Monitors? Looking for non-GPS for running indoor and out, bike, mine on trainer or on the road and swim. Garmin FR60 seems best as it can fit all needs? Any others that might be better from Garmin? How about other brands? I’m having a hard time finding the comparable models from other brands.

Why Is The 12-lead ECG Measurement Better Than The Polar Heart Rate Monitor?
I suppose you mean a 3 lead halter monitor. That monitor looks at the heart in two angles (lead one and two) it’s purpose is to capture data over a long period of time to see if your heart experiences any arrhythmias throughout the day. But it only looks at the heart through two angles. A 12 lead ECG looks at the heart with go figure 12 leads leads one, two, three, avl, avf, avr, v1,v2,v3,v4,v5,v6. This ECG lets the interpreter look at every aspect of electrical activity though almost all of the heart muscle, and conduction pathways. This helps diagnose heart attacks, heart blocks, and dysrythmias. The 12 lead ECG only captures about a 3 second strip of cardiac activity so if the heart is not experiencing a dysrythmia at the time then the interpreter will not see it. This is why both machines have there place in diagnosing heart conditions. The 12 lead is for lack of a better word “big picture” whereas a halter monitor or just a simple 3 lead ECG used in ER rooms for monitoring tell a long story.
Should I Get A Heart Rate Monitor……….? I run about 3-4 times a week and I lately got the nike plus chip, which is pretty fun.
Anyway, i’m now thinking about getting a cheap polar watch……do you think it’s worth it? cause I’m afraid I’ll stop using it after a few runs cause it will get annoying and who know if I’ll follow what my heart beat says…
I would stick with the Nike+ unless you should either monitor your heart rate because of a physical problem or need it for serious training such as getting into race shape for peak performance. Heart rate is the best indicator for short intervals since it lets you know when to run the next interval when your heart rate reaches 120 heart beats per minute. This alone is worth a heart rate monitor for milers or serious runners since your rapidly increase your fitness by training this way since it will train your body to adapt to the stress and improve running at your maximum. Remember your heart does not lie so it’s a great tool to listen to….
Heart Rate Monitor Recommendation? I’m looking for a recommendation for heart rate monitor for my cardio exercise, I’m looking for one that has high accuracy in measuring the heart rate and not too expensive.
Polar, Garmin and Timex all have reliable brands, look on-line for all the bells and whistles a model can have to meet your needs. I got a Garmin 301 on Amazon when it wasn’t the newest model, a couple of years older, for under $100 and it will tell me high and average heart rate, speed, distance run even a virtual trainer that will let me know if I am ahead or behind the time I set for a run and will do this across other sports. And it will adjust my maximum heart rate as my condition improves as well as tell me in which heart rate zone I’m training in.

Anyone Know Of A Good Heart Rate Monitor? I want it to make sure I keep up a certain heart rate for for a period of time. That will probably be the only use I will have for it.

I bought a Sigma Sport on clearance at the the Chicago Bike Show a couple years ago and it works fine.
The sensor belts are all the same whether you get the cheapest or top of the line.
If all you want is heart rate without any of the stopwatch, alarm, or average functions, the cheapest one you can find will be OK.

I left a message on their Web site three days ago and haven’t heard from them.
1. In the Time of Day display, press Set until “Settings” is displayed.
2. Press OK. “Limit Set” is displayed.
3. Press OK.
4. Press Set to switch between heart rate limits as BMP or HR Max %. Press OK when it is on BMP.

Are The “calories Burned” On A Polar Heart Rate Monitor Accurate? I just bought my HRM after Christmas and have really enjoyed it. However, I have often wondered about the accuracy of the calories burned. I can’t really find any information on the web about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
No, they are just an estimate. The actual calories burned will vary greatly even for 2 people of the same weight, depending upon their muscle mass and how often they exercise. So just use the calories and use them as a rule of thumb to compare one workout session to the next to see if you burned more or less calories. Use the heart rate monitor to keep your heart rate in the target zone as much as possible during your training session.

Heart Rate Monitor? I was looking at heart rate monitors online at a sports store. They range from $35 to over $350. Does anyone recommend a decent brand or type without spending the big bucks?
My treadmill at home is lower end and the heart rate doesn’t work very well. The one at the gym is fine, but it would nice to have one of my own.
I had a Polar F11. I bought it on line for $159 with free shippping. I really liked it until it broke. . I sent it in repairs today so I will have to wait until the results come in. I bought it in January of 2007 so hopefully it is still under warranty. My spin cycle instructor has had his for 5 years.
When it was working, I loved it. If you are female, it comes in a smaller wrist size. It also is the lowest price Polar HRM that has the really comfortble chest strap. The ones below that F11 have a really uncomforable strap. Also, most gym equipment is coded for Polar HRMs. The F11 has a lot other frills that I learned to use. Once you figure that out, it’s fun!

The Polar F6 is the better heart rate monitor. For example, it can keep up to 12 daily files (diaries) of your training, whereas the F4 can’t do that. With daily files, you can review what you did during your previous sessions. Both Polar F4 and F6 count calories, but the Polar F6 goes one step further: it tells you the percentage of calories due to fat burnt. This is very useful information for people wanting to lose weight!

Why Is My Heart Rate Monitor Showing A Huge Calorie Amount? Today, just doing regular things (driving and grocery shopping) it tells me 500 calories spent in 2 hours!
Last night, doing a weights class at the gym (this is a hard class but not hugely cardio) it tells me 800 calories in 70 minutes!!
These numbers must be wrong.
Using the first number, being awake 16 hours in a day, I would burn 8000 calories per day at that rate. Of course that is not possible.
In my weights class, using my own judgment, I estimate that it burns about 300-500 calories.
The monitor is a Timex brand, it is brand new. The heart rate strap goes around my chest and there is a watch. Everything seems to work great. I had to enter my weight and my maximum heart rate.
The fact that it is SO FAR OFF makes me think something is wrong, not just that the device is a little unreliable. What could be wrong?
I have done some checking online, and I see that a lot of other people have the same question. And they have it with the Polar brand, which is a respected brand, not just the Timex. I have a friend who has a Polar and after two hours of tennis (doubles) she said her calories burnt were 1400! I couldn’t believe it! I told her no way is it that high and she said yes it is correct. (But surely it is wrong.)
What is going on with these devices and the calories count?

Yeah, that’s definitely wrong. I personally use the Polar F4 and it’s right on target. My first thought was that you didn’t enter your weight correctly but if you did, it’s probably just a malfunction. My second thought was that the monitor was cross talking with another one. Sometimes if you workout too close to someone else, your monitor will pick up someone else’s heartbeat. That still shouldn’t give you crazy high results, though. I’d return the monitor because it’s useless to you this way.

Heart Rate Monitor Watch Reccomendations? I was looking for a heart rate monitor watch to request for Christmas and I am overwhelmed by the selection and prices. I am a runner and I also live an active lifestyle with the gym and walking/biking/hiking etc and so I need a watch that can calculate my calories burned fairly accurately. I don’t need gps or to plug in meals or anything. Just a reliable calories burned calculator. I want to have to fiddle with it as little as possible while exercising too so ease of use is important. That and reasonable pricing. Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated!!! 🙂
There are a ton of options. I’ve personally used both Garmin and Polar and both brands are pretty solid. I’ve also heard good things about Omron and Mio, though. In terms of pricing, what models to get, etc, I’d recommend checking out Heart Rate Monitors USA. That’s where I’ve gotten both my monitors. Their prices are good and they let you shop by feature and price range.

All in all, if I had to pick one type of HRM to recommend for a runner, it would probably be the Garmin Forerunner series. They’re comfortable, offer great monitoring ability, and they’re well-priced.

What Is A Good Calorimeter/heart Rate Monitor? I’m looking to invest in a quality heart rate monitor/calorimeter for weight lifting. I like to lift weights (both heavy and light) but I don’t know how many calories I’m burning in the process.
I would like to keep it under $200. I’ve looked at the “Polar AW200”, but it seems more for cardio exercises that weight lifting.
I’m also looking at the “GoWear fit Lifestyle and Calorie Management System”, but I think it requires an online subscription to retrieve the amount of calories burned.
It doesn’t matter to me whether I have to wear the strap on my chest or not. Whichever method gets me the most accurate reading of calories burnt will work.

Danny Dreyer, author of Chi-Running is about the only running guru I know of that is against Heart Rate Monitors. He thinks it’s best to just listen to your body. That by paying attention to your body and not a bunch of gadgets you can tell more about your body than any gadget can. People have off days and if you paid attention only to a HRM you might over do it by trying to keep your Heart Rate in the right zone. as opposed to just running at a pace that feels good.
However, I have a HRM and I’m really happy with it. My main concern is that when I’m running and day dreaming I have a tendency to slow down. I also wanted to make sure I would push myself but not over do it.
So the basic Heart Rate Monitor has a watch part and a strap that goes around your chest. the watch part is a pretty good sports watch but it also displays your heart rate.
Bear in my I’m simplifying things, but the idea is that we can determine our Maximum Heart Rate, and that we can benefit by running in certain zones. For instance, it is generally understood that running at 65% of the max is really good for weight loss. and that running at 85% is anaerobic.
Most HRM watches have a way of inputting your max HR and then can display what % you are at.
Good HRMs will till you at the end of your workout what your Max HR was, what your average was, and some will even show you how many minutes you were in each Zone.
Really Good HRMs will have interval timers, and alarms. so you could set it to beep after 5 minutes to let you know when your warm up is over. or you could set it to beep if your heart rate goes too high or too low.
The best HRMs will have some kind of computer interface and will automatically log your runs and graph them. Also computer interfaces are the best way to program complicated interval training programs.
When you start looking at the best HRMs you will find they have GPS built in. It turns out that having a GPS HRM watch gives you the most flexibility in programming runs and looking at computer graphs and displays.
Mostly you will find runners with GPS HRMs. In gym the GPS is useless. but the HRM is still very useful. on the treadmill and elliptical a HRM watch means you can let go of the handles and swing your arms. Plus you get a log of your activity.
I’ve tried Low end polars and timexes. They are both adequate. The Timex “Trainer” line is about $100. I like them because they have good interval timer features.
I ended up getting a Garmin 305. The 305 has a lot of features and doesn’t cost as much as the newer models.
there is a blog called DC Rainmaker where a guy talks about HRMS and GPSs. He has compared a lot of the models and it’s worth checking out.
